The Mighty Mitre

Sometimes reviewing a menu or business can be a little daunting and nerve racking. On this occasion however we were greeted by the general manager of the hotel and were instantly put at ease. We were led through the newly refurbished bar area and onto the restaurant. The staff were so happy, and clearly proud to be working at The Mitre. They were happy to answer any questions we had. Thankfully, this hospitality continued throughout our time here, not just for the welcome.

After a quick drink and some snaps we were whisked upstairs for a tour of the hotel. It’s currently under renovations and we’ve been told the rest of the hotel will be bought in line with the decor downstairs. The upstairs is due to be completely gutted and given a new lease of life. The hotel itself is what I imagine Mary Poppins bag to be like inside. Little corridors and staircases running here there and everywhere. I loved the character of the building and if you’re lucky enough to have a room on the Cathedral side, you won’t be disappointed. The view is stunning!

The downstairs bar area that has already had its makeover, its gorgeous. I can honestly say I love what they’ve done with the place. Lots of trinkets, carefully dotted around. They’ve gone for a deep blue in the bar with gold and copper accents. Very eclectic in their choice for accessories (think tasteful vintage bric-a-brac). Exposed filament bulbs. Mirrors, lots of mirrors and some fabulous pictures of old Manchester… Leading out back to the restaurant. They’ve opted for a wall of the busiest forest inspired wallpaper, with dark green and white washed wooden cladding. Marble tables and more of those glorious little trinkets. I’m almost certain I was a magpie in a former life; so the thoughtful copper accents were very much appreciated.

… on to the food! I had the Risotto Bon Bon’s to start. They were lovely, fluffy, and light with a sun-dried tomato and basil sauce to accompany. It worked absolutely perfectly. They were a real treat. The show stealer for me though was the Bang Bang Chicken burger. Spicy Chicken fillet burger coated in satay sauce. A combination I had never even thought of, and I’m so angry that I’ve not tried it sooner. As with most food bloggers, your eyes light up at the sight of something special. I could feel my burger being eyeballed by all at my table. Knowing the quickest way to the heart is food, I quickly gave them all a little piece to try. An echo of “mmmmm” “oh my god, that’s so good” followed. All of us, taken back by their bold choice in flavours and textures. I would come back to The Mitre, just for that burger. It really was THAT good. The Cajun fries on the side were delicious too! Sweet potato fries are always a winner in my eyes, but when they come out crispy on the outside and covered in cajun spice, I’m in heaven. There were a lot of fingers in my basket, nicking a chip or two. The dish does come with a slaw on the side too. In my honest opinion, it didn’t need it. The dish works perfectly without it.

Our visit to The Miter hotel was, overall, great. The food was really tasty. The decor and soft lighting is right up my alley. I could have stayed in the restaurant all night chatting away.
