A Sunday Roast In Tarporley, Cheshire

We recently took a trip to The Alvanley Arms in Tarporley. Within 15 minutes of sitting at the table, we knew we were in trouble…

This 400-year-old coaching inn is picture perfect and perched on the edge of a stunning lake. They have a beautiful garden right on the water’s edge that’ll be perfect for sipping in the summer sun. Mark our words on that one.

We were invited down by the wonderful Manager, Amy-Lou who we met on a previous trip to a nearby restaurant. As beautiful and as warm as the last time we met, she happily took us on a little tour of the pub, showed us to our table and then talked us through the menu. We were invited to review their Sunday roast. Amy knew it was good… but needed an extra stamp of approval. We were happy to oblige!

It was the 13 hours braised beef for me and Alisha chose the turkey… she was won over with the pigs in blankets (because they’re not just for Christmas, you know).

The beef fell apart with the push of my fork. So unbelievably tender and rich. All of the trimmings were here too; Mashed potato, crispy and fluffy roasties, braised red cabbage (a rarity these days), cauli-cheese (fave), parsnips, carrots, leeks, and not forgetting a giant Yorkshire pud.

Little by little, we chipped away at this magnificent plate. Looking up at each other every few moments to check the other was still breathing and not in a roast induced coma… This truly is a marathon meal and worth every mouthful. We absolutely loved it!

As if she could smell the vulnerability Amy leapt to our side when our plates were cleared to offer us pudding “oh go on then, just a small one, you pick for us!”. So pick she did!

Homemade brownie and Belgian waffle with salted caramel ice cream. Thankfully the portions were not as big as the roast… The brownie was warm and gooey. A real chocolate lover’s dream.

Overall we were very impressed. The Alvanley Arms is relaxing, welcoming, perfect for families and if its value for money, without compromising the quality you’re looking for you’ll need to add this to your visit list. This roast was just £13.95! We’ll be back in summer for some drinks by the lake that’s for sure!

*This food was gifted to us, however, The Alvanley Arms are not exempt from our critique. This is a true representation of our experience.
