Your Sunday's will Never be the Same Again!
Cottonopolis | Manchester
Needing no introductions (but I'll give you one anyway)
Cottonopolis, an Asian-inspired bar & restaurant, is based in one of the Northern Quarter’s most iconic Grade-II buildings.
Red brick meets raw and industrial furnishings, offset with tropical plants and a glittering mirrorball - the centrepiece accompaniment to delicious food, signature cocktails, and a stellar soundtrack of Mancunian DJs - and now on Sundays, they are set to open the stage to the very best of local jazz musicians, as guests tuck into a 3-course sharing feast.
Jazu kissa, a concept which started in 1920s Japan, are spaces where jazz music is played for dedicated listening rather than as background music. An essential musical resource for musicians, journalists and jazz enthusiasts, there were around 600 jazu kissa operating across Japan at their peak.
Taking influence from jazu kissa for the music and atmosphere, Cottonopolis has launched a brand-new Asian-inspired ‘Meat and Three’ menu, which will take place every Sunday from midday; as diners enjoy the soulful melodies of live jazz music. An indulgent feast of Asian flavour, the menu consists of snacks to share, a choice of mains, plus a delicious selection of side dishes and dessert - for £30 pp.
For starters
To begin the feast we devoured;
- Shrimp Crackers
- Cauliflower Karaage
- Chicken Karaage
The choice of meats
I opted for the Honey & Soy Tamworth Pork Belly (slow roasted with honey & soy - finished over the grill) while Jamie drooled over the Cumin & Szechuan Lamb Shoulder (marinated in Szechuan pepper, cumin - slow roasted & grilled).
An array of side dishes
- Clarence Court Tomago Rice (clarence court eggs, dressed with chilli and sesame oil)
- Kimchi Grilled Cabbage (robata grilled, finished with spicy kimchi dressing)
- Sweet Potato & Wasabi Mayo (grilled & dressed with wasabi mayo, teriyaki glaze, fresh chillies & spring onions)
Saving the best until last!
Burnt White Chocolate Cheesecake (whipped to a mousse-like texture, served on a buttery miso biscuit crumb, topped with burnt white chocolate crumb.)
